What HR leaders can learn from our people’s ‘why’

Culture & employee experience
Member engagement

Our hot take: the best health platform can only be built by people who genuinely care.

We’ve poured our hearts into becoming the industry leader in personalized health, and that success goes way beyond the technology… it’s the incredible people behind it that make us who we are.

We pulled our team aside and asked them the big question:

What is your personal ‘why’?

The stories we collected were powerful.

They didn’t just reveal why they get out of bed in the morning; they revealed a shared empathy for what happens when solutions like Personify Health change lives – including their own!

This deep purpose is exactly what translates into better health outcomes, smoother operations, and real cost savings for you and your members.

Care > compliance

Think about it: are you going to hire a baker for your wedding cake who is clock-watching and doesn’t really care if the cake is a little stale, or the three-tier collapses? You want someone who cares about that, for you, this is a huge, important day, and every detail matters.

At Personify Health, we don’t just bake the cake. We understand that we are managing a potentially life-critical service for your most valuable asset: your people.

Here are 4 lessons you can learn from our peoples’ “why” and why, ultimately, their purpose makes members’ lives healthier.

The most effective health solutions are built by people who have personally navigated the complexities of the healthcare system.

For our employees, this empathy translates directly into ensuring members experience simplified access and feel empowered at every stage of their journey.

Our Live Services Health Coach, Lauren Freedman, specializes in supporting members with chronic illness. She came to the role as a patient advocate after navigating her own health issues.

“I came to health coaching as a patient advocate… It’s my aim to provide that to others who may not have the same kind of network or may feel that they’ve been thrust into healthcare without a roadmap.”

Johnson Adams, Manager of Case Management at Personify Health, recalls his own experience as an international student struggling with a complicated medical bill he didn’t know how to handle.

“I’ve seen how overwhelming it can be when someone has a diagnosis but no guidance… I don’t want people to feel lost inside the healthcare system. Knowing I can help bring clarity, stability, and support keeps me passionate about this work.”

Lesson #2: Purpose-driven innovation connects our people to member outcomes

Innovation isn’t always about the latest feature. Nowadays, it’s about using data strategically. At Personify Health, we have an entire team that is passionate about research, crunching numbers, and continuous improvement – for our clients, members, and the business itself.

Introducing the Personify Insights Lab (PIL) team.

Michele Metzler, Manager of Analytics Development in the PIL team, found her “why” at graduate school when she realized just how to engage the public to improve their physical health – and why health & wellbeing absolutely belong in the workplace.

”When I got to graduate school, it dawned on me that the best way to help people improve their physical activity (and therefore their emotional and mental health) is to target them where they spend the vast majority of their days – at work! One of my ‘catchphrases’ is ‘work is to adults, what schools are to kids’. If you want to prevent children from experimenting with drugs, you have a DARE intervention at school. If you want adults to be active, give them a workplace health promotion program.”

Michele is proud of the work the team has done on the “Investing with impact: Making workforce health work for your business” report, which helps show the true value-on-investment (VOI) to clients and is a clear demonstration of the innovation her team is continuously providing.

Lesson #3: We walk the walk to prove just how successful our platform can be

Oh yes, we do indeed “drink our own champagne”, especially when it leads to healthier employees, a happier culture, and a more unified healthcare journey.

Chelauna Cosby, Senior Strategic Manager for Transform, links her personal self-care rituals directly to the quality of the program she manages.

“I make sure my calendar always has a few sacred self-care days each month. I feel privileged to be part of a team… all working together and supporting each other to make Transform the absolute so every participant, sponsor, and coach walks away saying, “Wow, that was Transform at its best.””

This dedication to fostering a healthy and happy culture at Personify Health is what makes our solutions authentic. Tiarra Chambliss, our Employee Engagement & DEIB Manager, confirms that this internal support is a direct input for success.

“My ‘why’ is helping people do their best work. When employees feel engaged, connected, and supported, it has a direct, positive impact on our members and clients.”

Lesson #4: A personalized strategy for your diverse workforce is the key to high engagement

There’s a reason one of the core pillars that makes us who we are, is that we reject the one-size-fits-all approach.

Your workforce is beautifully diverse, as so should be a health platform that they use every day. If it’s not accessible and personalized to their individuality, it simply just won’t work or be engaging.

“Health should be personal, accessible, and empowering. I’m driven by the opportunity to help people feel seen and supported, especially those who’ve been underserved or overwhelmed by the healthcare system.” – Liz Schmittgens, Director of Solution Consulting at Personify Health.

Johnson Adams’s cultural understanding is essential to navigating complex care. Johnson speaks six Nigerian languages, a testament to the need for cultural competence in every patient interaction.

“We’re not just managing nurses and case management coordinators, but leading a diverse group, each bringing unique perspective to patient care.”

When our teams invest the time to truly understand the person – their culture, their challenges, and their specific needs – we deliver personalization at its most powerful, and members see better health outcomes because of it.

Why? Answered. What? Now.

You’ve seen our Why. Now, let us show you how our purpose-driven personalized health platform drive health outcomes up, and drive down healthcare costs.
