Executive to Drive Growth in Specific Areas of the Northeast Among Mid- to Large-Sized Employer Groups
FRESNO, Calif. (January 4, 2022) – HealthComp, the largest independent health benefits administrator in the country, today announced the appointment of Michael Scallen to the position of Vice President of Sales. In this role, Scallen will drive growth among brokers and their mid- to large-sized employer groups in the Northeast region, specifically starting in the metro DC area and moving north into Pennsylvania and New England.
“We’re thrilled to bring Michael on board,” said Tom Martel, CGO at HealthComp. “He’s a wealth of knowledge—20 years in the health benefits space—having worked for both a large carrier and a third-party administrator (TPA). He’s dealt with fully funded and self-funded programs, as well as the ASO market, so he’s well-equipped to help brokers and employers navigate the various complex options. He also brings a phenomenal track record of sales success and an in-depth understanding of the Northeast—with many pre-existing relationships with brokers and employer groups.”
“I’m excited to join the HealthComp team,” said Michael Scallen. “I’ll be able to hit the ground running with immediate targets to increase our presence and brand awareness. I’m looking to hone our distribution channels and partnerships with third-party vendors—with all of these initiatives aimed at driving growth for the company.”
Scallen noted that, up until now, brokers and employers in the Northeast looked to the same TPAs. However, with fast-rising healthcare costs intensified by COVID-19, employers now want alternative solutions that are more creative and customizable. “This is where HealthComp outshines the competition. As a truly independent benefits administrator, we can deliver custom solutions that integrate various point solutions. This helps employers better control costs, while also meeting the needs of their specific member populations.”
Negotiations between large carriers and providers are heating up. Carriers are having to make tough decisions, in some cases, excluding certain providers at the local level. “HealthComp offers flexibility, as we’re not locked into using a specific provider network,” Scallen said. “Instead, we can help employers find, switch, or customize a network solution specific to their location and needs. This significantly benefits employees, who gain broader access to quality care.”
Scallen will be based in Connecticut, so he’s centrally located to service the Northeast. “This territory has so many different regions—each with its own attributes, challenges, and needs,” he said. “Tracking and adapting to these trends is something I’ve enjoyed doing throughout my career, and I’m enthusiastic to now bring these skills to HealthComp.”
“When considering a program change, employers want assurance that their employees will be happy with the service. In this regard, HealthComp has a competitive advantage. It offers superior member experience, as evidenced by its high Net P/providers/romoter Score (NPS) of 80, whereas the industry average is 12.”
Scallen has 20 years of experience in the health benefits industry. Prior to HealthComp, he served as Director of Sales for the Northeast at UMR, where he developed and implemented sales strategies that successfully grew the company’s customer base among mid- to large-sized employers interested in a self-funded, self-administered model. Prior to that position, Scallen worked as a senior account executive at UnitedHealthcare in New York City, where he managed a large block of fully insured, self-funded and ancillary business across several platforms and product lines.
