Seems there’s something new every day when you work in healthcare: new governmental regulations, insurance company rules and, yes, a plethora of ICD-10 codes! We no longer talk in complete sentences but rather in acronyms: HIPAA, CMS, ACO, RVU … The list goes on for miles.
As healthcare executives, how do we remain current and relevant? Attending professional society meetings is certainly one way. It’s fair to say that as much can be learned in a one-hour meeting with peers as in reading the entire Federal Register! Peer interaction is crucial, even if it is via listserv. Why reinvent the wheel when others in your profession, perhaps even the same specialty, have already been there?
Another, often underutilized source of up-to-date information in today’s technology age is the webinar. Having recently viewed several of these in order to maintain CEUs required for my CPC certification (yes, more acronyms!), I’ve found them to be a great, inexpensive source of information, and an easy way to attend without having to be away from work.
That said, the chance to get away and attend the annual conferences is not only good for the mind but also the soul! It’s an opportunity to reconnect with kindred spirits who understand exactly what it’s like to be in your shoes. Topics are often pre-selected to appeal to all attendees. There is a great deal of information packed into a couple of days which can be overwhelming, but the evening socials provide a much-needed chance to relax, enjoy some music and, perhaps, even partake in a dance or seven!
The bottom line – stay CONNECTED! We are all in this together!
